Do teeth whiteners damage enamel?

asked:

Such as Crest white strips premium, for instance. I’d like to whiten my teeth but not at the expense of damaging them, so I’d like to know. Also, how severe is the tooth sensitivity after the whitener is used, and how long does it last?

  1. Maryn Bittner Says:

My dentist says they work by removing the topmost layer of enamel, exposing whiter enamel that’s never met coffee, tea, tobacco, or other staining agents. This puts the nerve closer to the surface, resulting in far greater sensitivity in general and to cold in particular. This may lessen in time, or not. Toothpastes manufactured for sensitivity reduction are effective for some people, but not everyone.

In the end, he recommends against it, especially for patients who have some sensitivity issues already.

it doesnt ruin your enamel to the point of damage. the sensitivity depends on how sensitive your teeth are to begin with-i used them and my teeth are VERY sensitive to start with so….they were more after whitening them. they are safe to use-dentists recommend it rather than the old way to whiten them with bleaching them. it last a long time if you dont drink coffee, smoke, drink soda or any of the usual things that cause your teeth to get stained. i recommend you get your teeth cleaned before using them if possible-then all the stains you have now will be removed.

you usually see results in about 1-2 weeks, depending on how stained your teeth are now.
