Severe pain and sensitivity when I use whitening trays from the dentist. will the pain last?
On Saturday I got some whitening trays (moulded to the shape of my mouth) and peroxide gel from the dentist and am supposed to wear the trays for 4 hours everyday. However about 3 hours after putting the trays in my teeth hurt like HELL, its like extreme sensitivity, except they twinge and tingle even when my mouth is closed. It makes my whole body shudder etc etc.. this pain continues for around 30 hours after putting the tray in so I can’t concentrate at school and stuff. Even after the 30 hours pass my teeth still hurt a bit and I can’t drink cold water.
Basically I can put up with the pain for another few days, but I’m supposed to wear these trays everyday for the next 3 – 6 weeks and then top up the whitening every year. However I CANNOT bear to put myself through the pain for that long.
So my question is – after wearing the trays and exposing my teeth to the gel everyday, will my teeth “get used” to the gel and stop being so sensitive (so far I’ve only used the trays twice)? Or will it hurt this majorly forever? I assumed the latter, but my parents are all like “just keep wearing them, your teeth will get used to them, blahblah..”. I really want to keep wearing them cause it cost so much to buy the trays and gel (£199) that i can’t just waste it… but then again I’m worried about permanently damaging my teeth.
oh & the gel I’m using is 10% peroxide which is the lowest the dentists offer, I’ve tried using sensodyne toothpaste but it doesn’t numb the pain, aspirin and paracetamol don’t help. I’m aged 16 so am aware I will prob suffer more sensitivity cause of my young teeth.
can you please answer with your own experiences cause I’ve read basically everything there is out there on whitening, and most of those whitening sites are bias only saying the good things.
oh also – my parents say that if I don’t use the gel for a few days then I’ll only get worse pain because then my teeth will “find it harder to get used to the gel”. I highly doubt this though, because I haven’t read anything about this being true.

when your not wearing your trays rub a thin layer of sensodine toothpaste on your teeth a couple of times a day and don’t it rinse off. I also find that my teeth are extremely sensitive when i bleach, and this is what i do, along with brushing with sensodine. it also makes my gums burn so i make sure to remove any excess that gets on them. All bleaches cause teeth to become sensitive even the store bought brands. You will get the same results if you wear the trays every other day or so, appose to everyday, but it will take longer. also, after your place the bleaching trays in your mouth, gently rinse with water and spit so the bleach wont be so concentrated and it spreads on the teeth evenly. Remember all you need is a drop of bleach in each “tooth mold”. A lot of people line their trays with bleach and it isn’t necessary.
