Which is least damaging to teeth: laser teeth whitening or drugstore whitening strips?

asked:

Also, a few other related qs:

In which ways does each method damage teeth? thinning of enamel? etc?

Which method would have longer lasting results? and which would cause the least sensitivity?

How long will the sensitivity last in each case, and how intense will it be?

Over the counter strips have a lower concentration of peroxide in them, so they will have less of a bleaching quality (and less of the damaging qualities) than the peroxide used at the dentist.

They work by dissolving the organic portions of enamel, since those are the parts that bond to stains and dyes (which are also usually organic.) The peroxide dissolves some of the organic tissue leaving the hard, mineralized inorganic tissue. Though the inorganic stuff is hard, it is also brittle (like glass; you can compress it but it shatters easily.) So your teeth are weaker. Also, the peroxide irritates the soft tissue around the teeth as well.

The professional strength will do more and last longer, but it’s also much more expensive and may cause sensitivity. I’ve heard that the one-session ones (with the light, usually called Zoom or in-office bleaching) can be quite uncomfortable, but people don’t usually have as many problems with the trays that you bring home from the dentist and do yourself in the evenings.

    Hope this helps!

Laser teeth whitening is less damaging by far!!! Therefore, your teeth will be less sensitive. It doesn’t thin the enamel. However laser is by far the most expensive.
